Nellie’s Free Range Eggs (Sponsored)

This super cute chicken likely inspired JP to make me a homemade mother’s day breakfast all by himself.

I’ve bought Nellie’s brand eggs many times in the past. I like that the eggs are free range and the price point is affordable compared to other brands of free range eggs.

Easy to prepare, inexpensive and nutrient dense, eggs are one of the most versatile and nutritious meal or snack options around. Plus, they’re a great first food to get kids into the kitchen and interested in cooking at an early age.

JP has slept with the stuffed chicken in his bed for the past week. On Sunday morning we didn’t hear him wake up but he announced that he made me a soup for breakfast. Luckily, he didn’t turn on the stove, his “soup” consisted of two ingredients in a pot. Now that JP feels comfortable in the kitchen, we will be using our eggs to make something savory like an egg and cheese breakfast sandwich.

Phone Ringer

Do you sleep with your phone/text ringer on? I do. I keep the sound down but leave my ringer on, just in case. We don’t have a home phone. I mainly keep the ringer on in case the school bus driver calls in the early morning. I like to know as soon as possible if we have to adjust our morning schedule.

But that means I’m often disturbed in my sleep when people text me (or Ray) after I’ve gone to sleep. I get texts from friends who can’t sleep and are thinking about plans for the weekend. I get texts from friends in other time zones where it’s only early evening. And some texts come from people getting back to me, even if it’s late at night (see text picture above).

I personally don’t text people after 9:30pm, unless I’m returning their text. I try to go to bed at 10pm each night. I know that is on the early side but by 11pm I would expect that people would not text me. I use e-mail to communicate with friends late at night to discuss ideas or plans that don’t need immediate attention. I wish others would do the same.

Do you keep your phone ringer on when you go to sleep? How do you handle the sleep disruption issue?

Good Food Made Simple (sponsored)

Recently I was asked to review a dinner entrée from Good Food Made Simple. I was happy to do it because I habitually eat unprocessed organic food. I was told I could make the purchase at Target.

My local Target only had one variety of Good Food Made Simple and because I’m vegetarian I didn’t eat the lasagna bolognese. However, my husband Ray did. And he really enjoyed it!

Not only was the lasagna bolognese good to eat, it was easy to prepare and affordable. I liked that I could prepare the meal quickly in the microwave without defrosting. This is a great meal to make when you have limited time. Add a salad on the side and you have a whole meal ready in five minutes. You can’t beat that on a busy day!

Deodorant

I thought it would be a fairly easy quest to find a chemical free deodorant. I have been using Dove for decades. I never thought twice about it until I realized that perhaps I should pay attention to the chemicals I put on my body, not just the ones I try not to put into it.

So I bought Kiss My Face fragrance free deodorant. And at the end of my morning run, I was stinky. I had never had a problem with body odor when using Dove. I did some quick online research and found a few articles which reviewed chemical free deodorants. I tried Schmidt’s and Native, both of which irritated and reddened my skin. I didn’t want to continue to invest in new deodorants through trial and error.

I went back to Kiss My Face but this time tried the Lavender scent. Winner! I’m sure this summer I will need to re-apply once during the day, but it’s worth it knowing I’m not putting harmful chemicals under my arm each day.

Can a Cow Save a Penguin ? (sponsored)

Exciting news! Stonyfield YoKids is sponsoring the AZA SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) program; together on a mission to help save endangered species. As part of a year-long effort, Stonyfield will not only be contributing funds to field work but aiming to drive kids and their families to see animals and conservation projects first hand at zoos, aquariums, and on the ground where the research is happening.

As the country’s leading organic yogurt maker, Stonyfield has long been focused on conservation and sustainability. Each year they keep over 185,000 pounds of toxic pesticides out of the environment, helping to safeguard species and their eco-systems.

Stonyfield YoKids’ sponsorship of AZA SAFE will support conservation efforts for 10 endangered species, including the African Penguin.

Did you know April 25 is World Penguin Day?  To commemorate World Penguin Day, Stonyfield and AZA are hosting a Facebook Live for kids and their parents to get a firsthand look at these majestic seabirds, as well as the conservation work being done to save them. Tune in to this Facebook Live broadcast direct from Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT on Tuesday, April 25 at 12 noon.

Stonyfield YoKids is also featuring an on-pack offer to get families out to visit any of the 131 participating AZA accredited member zoos and aquariums in their own communities (click here for a list). Now through the end of September families who buy two specially-marked YoKids yogurt multipacks will receive a FREE kid’s admission to their local AZA-accredited zoo or aquarium when they also buy an adult ticket.

Always made with USDA organic, non-GMO ingredients, Stonyfield YoKids yogurt now features as much as 40% less sugar than the leading low-fat kids’ yogurt.

Take a Bath

You don’t need a fancy bathtub or even jets to enjoy a hot bath. Simply fill up your tub with warm water, add some liquid bubbles or these awesome fizzies, light a candle and RELAX.

I try to make time for a bath at least once a month. I always do it after JP goes to bed so I know that no small child will barge into my cocoon of comfort. Oftentimes I read a book while soaking. Then I spend the last several minutes submerged and focused on my breathing.

Taking a bath is a sweet escape and you don’t have to leave your house to enjoy it.

Library App

I’m not the only one enjoying my library app for reserving books. I’ve noticed the shelves where the reserved books are placed are packed in my local library. Now there is even a library cart next to the ‘hold’ shelves to manage all of the reserved books.

Reserving a book on your library app is as easy as making an order on Amazon. Even though the books aren’t delivered to your door and sometimes you have to wait more than two days for your book to become available, it’s worth it in the end since it’s FREE! Who has space for new books anyway?

I love my library app and because it’s so easy to use I’m reading more this year than ever. Check your local library to see if they have an app.

Music as Therapy

Last week we attended JP’s school conference. It went well and we are so impressed with JP’s school. It’s not common for a public school to have a full time art teacher, technology teacher, science lab teacher and music teacher, but JP’s school has them all. JP has already started to code as well as play the keyboard.

We spoke to the music teacher about JP matching pitches and imitating sounds he hears such as the jingle of our phone. The teacher said to keep playing music as much as we can to expose JP to a variety of songs.

The only time I really play music is when I’m cooking. I listen to NPR when in the car or working from home. I’ve found it too dangerous to run with my headphones on. So when JP is with me we don’t always have music on. I’m trying to change that. So far he likes reggae the best. He told me the music was too sad when I played Beach House, likewise for his dad’s standby Radiohead.

One song that really makes me think is The National’s, Pink Rabbits. I first heard this song live when the band was practicing in Prospect Park one Friday afternoon before their concert. JP and I were playing in the park and it was amazing to hear live music and watch JP play. Times were different then, it was before we knew what obstacles were ahead. But I still get nostalgic when I hear that song.

Winter Isn’t Over

There is nothing like a snow day to remind us that it is still winter! The main reason I get tired of winter is because the layers of clothes and outerwear take up too much space in the house. Also, winter brings on more laundry. Winter clothes and the layers add up to a bigger load of laundry so I find I do laundry more often in winter than in summer.

Living in NYC or any major city, you probably don’t have much space. We have a tiny entryway, not big enough for the type of storage I’d like for winter gear. And certainly no room for a coat closet. Enter the canvas bag system. I bought an attractive canvas bag to store all of our winter hats, gloves and scarves. I hang the bag on the staircase banister. When it’s safe to put the winter gear away, I stuff it in a plastic bag in the back of my armoire.  Then the canvas bag becomes a beach bag! Repeat each winter and summer.

Voila.
