Get outside

This unusual weather pattern we’ve had, with temperatures in the 60s and even 70s has encouraged many of us to dream of spring.

I’ve known for a long time that I feel my best when I spend time outside. My mom told me that as a baby I would crawl to the door and say “outside.” Once she even found me crawling down the sidewalk after I had pushed open the screened door.

I choose to run outside year round instead of in a gym. It’s a hectic run with traffic for the first mile. But once I get into Prospect Park, I’m enveloped in trees and my thoughts run free. My deep breaths help me feel calmer inside the park.

As a family we try to go to a local park or kayaking once a month. On our recent trip to visit friends in Florida we were on a boat almost each day of the vacation. We also visited a state park for a very family friendly hike.

It’s not just me who feels the best when I’m outside. These recent studies also reveal that spending time in nature is good for your mental health.

So get out there!
